Obituary: Carol Phillips Poe

A prominent member of our Croatian diaspora, professor from the University of Georgia (USA) and coordinator of the "Study Abroad" program, Carol Phillips Poe, has passed away.

As she often pointed out, her last name, Phillips, is an Americanized version of the Filipaš family's last name. The family originated from the beautiful Croatian county of Žumberak. Carol (as we all call her) brought young public health students to Croatia for decades, mainly to our School. During their study stay in Croatia, American students visited various places of our homeland where they learned about the tradition of public health and Andrija Štampar as well as different public health challenges in continental and coastal Croatia. She also tried to familiarize her students with contemporary Croatian history, and visiting the hospital in Vukovar was one of the highlights of the study stay.

With her simplicity, modesty and direct approach, Professor Phillips Poe conquered the teachers and associates of our School. She especially took care of the scientific cooperation between the School of Medicine, the University of Zagreb and the University of Georgia and co-organized the Global Health Symposium, in which Brod-Posavina County also participated. She organized several visits of our teachers to the University of Georgia and was the key contact person for Croatian scientists at that University. Because of her tireless work, Carol Phillips Poe is the recipient of the Award for International Cooperation of our School. Her study room was full of photos of various places of our homeland, which were always in her soul and heart.

Many thanks for everything she has done to promote the School of Medicine of the University of Zagreb and the Republic of Croatia in the USA and the world!
