International Relations Office

The School of Medicine International Relations Office (IRO), founded in 1985, is one of the first international relations offices opened at one of the constituents of the University of Zagreb.

Activities of the IRO are:

  • Organisation and support of students during their outgoing and incoming mobility
  • Organisation and support of (non-)teaching staff during their outgoing and incoming mobility
  • Logistical support and organisation of international students, teachers, and delegation visits
  • Keeping records of outgoing and incoming mobility
  • Promoting the international recognition and status of the School of Medicine
  • Active work on expanding the network of partner universities and institutions
  • Support in the signing of international agreements
  • Support for the memberships in international associations, networks, etc.
  • International verifications of educational documents of the Schoom of Medicine graduates (cooperation with ECFMG, DataFlow, HireRight and other international agencies)

Applications for elective traineeships

Bilateral agreements, memorandums of understanding

With the School of Medicine being a constituent of the University of Zagreb, the School is also included in the bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding signed at the University level - the list is available here.

Erasmus+ Interinstitutional agreements

The list of School of Medicine Erasmus+ interinstitutional agreements is in the attached document. These agreements make the Erasmus+ student mobility for studies and the Erasmus+ staff mobility for teaching possible.

Erasmus+ Interinstitutional Agreements

Graduate and postgraduate students of the School of Medicine have at their disposal the following mobility options for the purposes of study or traineeship:

To ensure a successful application and quality mobility, it is recommended that the interested students contact the International Relations Office.

Erasmus+ study mobility

Erasmus+ provides funding for study stays (one semester or the entire year) at partner universities listed under the Erasmus+ Interinstitutional agreements.

The University of Zagreb publishes the Erasmus+ call for applications for study mobility in February for mobility during the upcoming academic year – more details on the application can be found on the University website.

During the University call for applications, the School of Medicine publishes an internal call for applications for the purpose of ranking candidates. The internal call will be published on the School’s website. The application documentation must be submitted through the School’s Registration Office.

The criteria for ranking candidates are as follows:

The application requires a certificate confirming at least the B2 level of the language in which the classes are conducted at the receiving institution.

Free mover study mobility

To study (one semester or all year) at universities with which the School of Medicine does not have a signed Erasmus+ interinstitutional agreement, the free mobility option can be used. During the free mover mobitlity the students are required to pay the tuition at both home and receiving university. There are no scholarships available from the School of Medicine or University of Zagreb for this type of mobility.

To apply, the students must send the filled and signed Learning Agreement (with the study plan) and official course plans of the courses they plan to take at the receiving institution.

The Medical Studies in English students should check additional information and follow the instructions at the LMS - link.

The application documentation should be sent to jasna.turkovic@mef.hr. Application deadlines are:

15 June for free mover mobility during the winter semester or the entire academic year
1 November for free mover mobility during the summer semester

A specific number of the candidates will be selected based on the study plan feasibility and GPA.

Erasmus+ traineeship

The Erasmus+ programme enables the financing traineeships (minimum 2 calendar months) in public or private institutions in the EU member states and Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.

The Erasmus+ traineeship is possible during the academic year, outside of regular lesson period. It is also possible to realise the traineeship as a recent graduate - within one year of graduating, but the student has to apply and be chosen by the University before the graduation (France does not accept recent graduate traineeships).

The University of Zagreb publishes a call for Erasmus+ mobility for traineeship applications twice a year, as follows (listed academic years are an example):

Students are obligated to find the receiving institution themselves and receive the Acceptance Confirmation letter before applying to the University of Zagreb.

The application requires a minimum B1 knowledge level of the traineeship language (as indicated in the Acceptance Confirmation).

Traineeships under bilateral agreements

Kansas University Medical Center

The traineeship at the Kansas University Medical Center includes clinical research traineeships in specific disciplines.

Applications to the call (open in November) are open to 5th-year medicine students. The call is published on the School's website. The application is submitted through the School's Registration Office.

Other traineeships

Students have the possibility to go on traineeships through various student associations (e.g. CroMSIC) or in indvidual organization.

The IRO provides support regarding the documentation (issued by the School) necessary to apply for these traineeships.

Graduate and postgraduate students studying outside of Croatia can apply for the following study or traineeship mobility types:

Erasmus+ study mobility

The students of the schools/faculties with which the Zagreb School of Medicine has a signed Erasmus+ Interinstitutional Agreement can apply for Erasmus+ Mobility for Study through the University of Zagreb – more details on the application can be found at the University of Zagreb website. B2 level of knowledge of the study language is required.

Medical students can choose our Integrated Studies in Medicine in English or Croatian.

Nursing students can choose Graduate study in Nursing in Croatian.

Students of doctoral studies can choose our PhD study in English: Biomedicine and Health Sciences, our PhD studies in Croatian: Biomedicina i zdravstvo or Neuroznanost.

For the support in writing the study plan and learning agreement, the students shoud contact the International Relations Office.

Free mover study mobility

The students of the schools/faculties with which the Zagreb School of Medicine does not have a signed Erasmus+ Interinstitutional Agreement can apply for a free mover study mobility. Free mover students are required to pay tuition at both their home university and the chosen program at the Zagreb School of Medicine (e.g. the tuition for the Zagreb Medical Studies in English is 12,000.00EUR/year).

Application deadlines are:

28 February for free mover mobility during the winter semester or the entire academic year
15 September for free mover mobility during the summer semester

The application documents should be sent to jasna.turkovic@mef.hr:

  1. Scan of ID document
  2. Proof of enrolment,
  3. Transcript of grades,
  4. Filled-out Learning Agreement with the proposed study plan,
  5. Proof of study language knowledge (at least B2 level).

For the support in writing the study plan and learning agreement, the students shoud contact the International Relations Office.

Traineeship mobility

To apply for the clinical or research traineeship (through all programmes), please send the following documents and information to clinical.electives@mef.hr no later than 4 months before the preferred start of the traineeship:

  1. ID or passport scan
  2. Proof of enrolment
  3. Transcript of grades
  4. CV
  5. Preferred disciplines (1-2 disciplines)
  6. Preferred traineeship period

The language of traineeship can be English and Croatian.

To ensure a successful application and quality mobility, it is recommended that the interested candidates contact the International Relations Office.

Outgoing (non)teaching staff

Erasmus+

Twice a year (in April and December), the University of Zagreb opens calls for mobility during the academic year for (non) teaching staff for the purpose of teaching and/or training – more details.

Teaching mobility is possible only towards the schools/faculties with which the School of Medicine has a signed Erasmus+ Interinstitutional Agreement. The mobility for the purpose of training (workshop, courses, job shadowing) is possible towards all institutions in the EU member states and Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.

The School of Medicine advertises the University call with additional instructions on the School’s website.

Academic Mobility

Twice a year (in October and February), the University of Zagreb opens calls for mobility of academic staff during the calendar year for the purpose of:

o A – mobility towards strategic partners
o B – international mobility towards higher education institutions and research institutions in the entire world
o C – mobility of PhD students - registration fees for active participation on scientific-professional conferences of PhD students

The internal call will be published on the School’s website. The application documentation must be submitted through the School’s Registration Office.

Open Medical Institute (OMI) seminars

In 2021, the School of Medicine signed a contract with the Open Medical Institute, Salzburg, Austria, by which the School has 10 places reserved for our residents and young specialists to participate at the OMI international seminars held by renowned international experts.

The seminars are held at the Arenberg Castle, Salzburg and the OMI funds all expenses except travel.

OMI 2024 Seminars

The heads of the departments are invited to nominate candidates to the International Relations Office for individual seminars.

The interested candidates who are not nominated can apply directly to OMI and might still be chosen through the OMI candidate selection.
