Heads of the departments have an important role in the process of organisation and management of the School. Their main task is to organise and manage the work of their department, which includes evenly assigning classes to teachers, reporting to the Dean on the completed lessons, cooperating with other departments and related departments at other University constituents, and proposing the plan and program of the department's operations.
The head of the department shall be elected by a secret vote among the faculty of the School of Medicine. The department is obligated to obtain a prior opinion of the Dean on the candidate’s programmes. The head is elected for a term of office of three years, and the same person can be re-elected. The election of the head is confirmed by the Faculty Council, and the head is answerable for their work to their department, Faculty Council and the Dean.
