The APRES project aims at providing information and recommendations on the appropriateness of prescribing antibiotics in primary care. The appropriateness of prescribing antibiotics is the extent to which the pattern of prescribed antibiotics is congruent with the antibiotic resistance pattern of bacteria. Coordinator: STICHTING NEDERLANDS INSTITUUT VOOR ONDERZOEK VAN DE GEZONDHEIDSZORG, Nethrelands. UZSM- partner (1.10.2009 – 30.9.2013)
  2. Prof.dr.sc. Jadranka Mustajbegović Improving quality and safety in the hospital: The link between organisational culture, burnout and quality of care (ORCAB.)
This is a multicentre study involving 10 partners from nine countries. The partners include universities from Greece, Ireland, United Kingdom (UK), Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Croatia, Portugal, Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. To date, relatively little systematic evidence exists as to what represents an effective and efficient way to improve quality of care and safety in hospitals and how hospital organisational culture influences quality and safety. The ORCAB project will address this gap. The overall aim of the ORCAB project is to benchmark the organisational factors that impact on health professionals well being, quality of hospital care and patient safety. It also aims at designing bottom-up interventions in order to improve patient safety and quality of hospital care. Coordinator: Aristotelio Panepistimio Thessalonikis, Greece. Cooperation HEALTH, duration 1.11.2009 – 30.4.2014.
  3. Doc. dr. sc. Mislav Jelić- “Magnetic scaffolds for in vivo tissue engineering” (MAGISTER)
MAGISTER is a frontier research project aiming to develop new conceptually type of Magnetic Scaffolds (MagS) for tissue regeneration and orthopaedic surgery. In MAGISTER the partnership comprises 20 partners from 11 European countries. It is coordinated by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ceramic and magnetic nanostructured materials development and characterisation) ( 1.12.2008 – 30.11.2012)
  4. Prof.dr.sc. Davor Ježek- “Bioreactor-based, clinically oriented manufacturing of engineered tissues” (BIO-COMET)Despite significant achievements in the field of regenerative medicine and the enormous potential for engineered tissue products, significant hurdles have prevented cellular therapies from gaining wide-spread clinical adoption. Manufacturing related issues have been proposed as key challenges to be addressed for the translation of regenerative therapies to the clinic and the successful commercialization of engineered products. Similar to other biotechnology sectors (e.g., vaccines or recombinant protein production), bioreactor systems could play a central role in establishing engineered tissues in the clinic. In fact, by automating and streamlining manufacturing processes, they would allow to improve product reproducibility, safety, standardization and possibly reach cost-effectiveness. This project aims at the development, pre-clinical and clinical testing of a sensor-based bioreactor system for the production of functional, autologous engineered grafts with reproducible properties. The bioreactor-based manufacturing paradigm will be addressed in the specific context of cartilage repair.(1.12.2011 – 30.11.2015)

BICRO – Proof of Concept

  1. Prof.dr.sc. Slobodan Vukićević – „New technology for improving heart function after miocard infarction“

During our previous scientific research in humans we discovered the isoforms of morphogenetic protein1 and demonstrated the links with specific human pathological conditions, including acute miokard infarction. We showed the efficacy of targeted therapy on heart function improvement by applying polyclonal antibodies in adequate animal models. The goal of the project is to select the most efficacious combination of our new monoclonal antibodies raised against particular isoforms that improve the heart function after acute miokard infarction and to file a concept patent application protecting the core therapeutic mechanism as well as to protect intellectual property related to the structure of the therapeutic molecules used as treatment following miokard infarction. New mechanisms of disease progression, new therapeutic targets and new therapeutic interventions for the treatment of this major problem of modern medicine represent an innovation with global potential of commercial development.
